Top 10 Holiday Organization Tips

We don’t get much fall weather here in the sunny south, but it has been pretty cool in the mornings this week and between that and all the decorations already popping up on store shelves, it’s bringing the holidays to mind so I thought I’d share my top 10 favorite holiday organization tips.

1)  Start early if you’re planning a family photo for your Christmas cards so that you’ll have time to get it scheduled and have everyone’s outfits ready.  We do a family photo card every year like these gorgeous Storkie Christmas cards and it can be surprisingly difficult to put together matching clothes for all seven of us.

2)  I keep all of my greeting cards, birthday cards and holiday cards organized in a photo box because it’s the perfect size and I can always find just the right card when I need one.  This way I’m not scrambling when I need to send out a thank you note or a last minute Christmas card to someone who wasn’t already on my list.

3)  Use a spreadsheet or word processing program to keep track of your Christmas card list so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every year.  I keep mine as a Word document so it’s easy to print the addresses on envelopes and it’s always handy on my computer if I need to update addresses during the year.

4)  Carry a list of clothing and shoe sizes for family members and others on your holiday shopping list.  Keep it in your purse or wallet and carry it during the year so you’ll always have the information handy and can take advantage of sales.  Plus your budget will benefit from not having to do all of your holiday shopping at once.

5)  Take notes throughout the year when people mention things they want or might like to have.  This really helps me to narrow down the options for my kids who want everything they see and my parents who have everything they need.

6) Store your holiday and other seasonal decorations in color coded boxes or create large labels for them so they’re easy to find in the attic, basement or whatever storage area they all end up in.

7) Plan your holiday meals several weeks or a month in advance and make a list of all the ingredients that you don’t already have on hand so that you can look for best prices or purchase them on sale and not have to worry about hunting for ingredients at the last minute.

8) Freeze some of your favorite baked goodies in advance like cookies and nut breads so you can entertain holiday guests without having to spend too much time in the kitchen.

9) Make a master calendar of holiday events and all family activities and keep it posted on the refrigerator or somewhere accessible so everyone can tell at a glance what’s going on to easily avoid double booking or overextending yourselves.

10) Schedule your holiday decorating for a time that family is available to help out so you don’t have to do it all yourself and you can create some lasting family memories.  Have everything you’ll need out of storage and ready, including a camera!

  1. Soooooo glad to see this list — Christmas will be here before we know it! I especially like the “freeze some of your favorite baked goodies” — I usually do that, and DO need to get together my list of goodies to make in order to get supplies early! Thanks a bunch for sharing!!
