Simple Secrets to Keeping Your Food Fresh Longer

Are you tired of throwing out food that has gone bad? One reason the items in your kitchen may be going bad is because of improper storage. Practice these simple storage tips and keep your food fresh for a longer period of time:

Apples

Keep apples away from other produce. If you purchase several types of apples, keep each variety in a separate basket or box on your kitchen counter.

Bananas

If you want to slow down the ripening process, take bananas out of the plastic bag. In order to prevent your bananas from bruising quickly, store them on a banana hammock or hanger.

Bread

Keep your bread on the counter or in a breadbox. If you want to prevent your bread from going stale or or getting hard, store it in the freezer before it reaches its expiration date and defrost or toast slices as needed.

Eggs

Keep your eggs in the original carton they came in—and store it inside the refrigerator. Avoid keeping your eggs in the side of the refrigerator door so they will maintain the appropriate temperature.

Garlic

Heads of garlic should be left unpeeled and stored in a dry, open container.

Herbs and spices

Most ground herbs and spices stay fresh for about half a year. However, you can also buy herbs and spices in their whole form, and then grind or crush them when needed. Doing so will keep them fresh for years.

Lettuce

Take the lettuce out of the store packaging, and then wrap it in sheets of paper towels. Place the lettuce in an open plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. This works for celery, too!

Onions

Keep onions in a cool and dark place. Make it a point to store onions separately from potatoes.

Potatoes

Place potatoes in a paper bag or an open container, then store in a dark, cool and dry spot.

These are just some tips on storage for everyday food items. What other tricks can you share with us?
