Live Life More Fully! Light the Candles

Live life more fully! That’s what I plan to do this year. I don’t really believe in New Year’s Resolutions and I wrote a post about that recently, why I believe goals and priorities are more important and achievable. However I do think that the beginning of a new year is the best time to assess and evaluate your goals and priorities – so whatever you want to call it, goal or resolution – one of my biggest this year is to live life more fully. I don’t mean take lots of trips to exotic locales or do anything wild and crazy, but to take more joy in the small moments.

Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.

This year I’m going to light the candles! I love candles of all sorts – scented candles, battery operated, votives, decorative – but I never seem to light them. I save them for “special occasions” so I’m not wasting batteries or using them up. In the meanwhile I keep buying them and receiving them as gifts so I have a few in the stockpile. What am I waiting for? I should be enjoying them.

I once received a fancy set of cookware as a gift from a relative and it sat in the box for several years while I used my raggedy old pots and pans because I didn’t want to ruin my beautiful new things. Instead I robbed myself of some of the joy that came with the gift. This year I’m going to use all of the appliances and cookware I received for Christmas (okay, last year’s too) and I’ll not be leaving anything in the box again.

The snowy white sands of Pensacola Beach are less than a thirty minute drive from my home and yet I made it out there maybe a handful of times last year. Once to take the kids to Fort Pickens and a few times to restaurants, but I never put my foot in the warm Gulf water. The kids are growing so fast and we all have such busy schedules but we are going to take a few days this year to slow it all down and enjoy some beach days together.

Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.

While assessing my priorities this year I realized that of the happiest times in my life only a few have been the really big occasions like the birth of my children, the majority of those times have been the small moments, like the times when you laugh and connect with friends and loves ones. So this year I’m going to pay more attention to the small moments and right now I’m going to go light the candles.

  1. AWESOME Post!!! This is GREAT information to start the new year!

  2. Iwish I lived close enough to the beach to go every week. I used to go every year, but I haven;t had my feet in the sand (except for Brandcation) since 2004!
