Build Your Own Giant Wood Stacking Block Game

Two of my five kids and I suffer from both seasonal allergies and sensitive skin so it can sometimes be hard to get the kids away from their screens and outside to play. I’m constantly trying to encourage outdoor activities so I love coming up with new and exciting things for them to do outside. Last weekend the kids and I worked together to build our own giant wood stacking block game, similar to Jenga but on a much larger scale and we had so much fun that they’re already planning their next “tournament”.

To play this super fun stacking block game you stack the 72 blocks in a tower with three blocks in each row, with each row alternating directions. You need at least two players but you can have as many as you want, if you have six or more players you may want to consider playing in teams. Each player pulls out a board from anywhere they want below the top level, then places that board on top of the stack. As the stack of blocks grows ever taller it becomes less and less stable and will eventually fall over. The player who pulls the last board before the tower falls is the loser, however I’ve gotta say that this is the only game I’ve ever played where it’s just as much fun to lose as it is to win!

To make a giant wood stacking block game of your own you will need (material cost is about $30):

  • 8 – 2′ x 4′ x 8′ pieces of lumber
  • Sandpaper
  • Circular saw or handsaw

Step 1 – Cut each of the 2′ x 4′ x 8’s into nine 10 1/2″ pieces. Measure the first cut carefully then use the first cut piece as a pattern for each of the additional pieces so they are all exactly the same length.

Step 2 – Sand the edges of each of the boards to remove any splinters. Although I wouldn’t let the kids near the saw, they very gladly did all the sanding.

Step 3 – Line up the boards in rows of three each, alternating the direction of each row, and get ready to have some fun!

The kids were so proud of themselves for helping build our giant wood stacking game and I’m thrilled that we got to spend some quality family time outdoors on this project. I can’t even count how many times we’ve played already and it’s a fabulous way to encourage them to play together outside and let them be free to be kids without worrying so much about our allergies. We love that our house is surrounded on three sides by trees, but the tree pollen sure gives us issues during this time of year. At least once a week I have to wipe down all the outside tables and chairs because it doesn’t take long for them to get coated in a fine layer of pollen. I make sure to do that before we go out to play or BBQ to reduce our exposure and I love that all® free clear liquid detergent and free clear mighty pacs® remove 99% of everyday and seasonal allergens (including cat and dog dander, dust mite matter, ragweed, grass, and tree pollen).

I used to wonder where all the pollen that I’d wipe up off the tables, chairs and car would go when I’d throw the wash rags in the laundry. Did that just spread it around to the other clothes being washed? Now I’m confident that although all® free clear is not intended to treat or prevent allergies, washing with all® free clear IS helping remove everyday allergens, as well as certain fragrances, which greatly improves the comfort of those of us with sensitivities.
