6 Tips for Saving Money on a Road Trip

Do you have a family road trip planned? How would you like to go on a road trip with your family without having to break the bank? Here are some great tips to remember when preparing for a road trip that can save you some bucks:

1) Stock up on snacks and drinks

Don’t tempt yourself with those overpriced bags of chips and sodas at the gas station or convenience store. Head to your local grocery store a few days before your big trip and stock up on your favorite snacks. Pack a cooler full of water, sodas and juices, too! You’ll be amazed at how much you can save by bringing your own snacks and drinks.

2) Bond with Mother Nature

Who says that costly inns and hotels are your only option? If your family is up for the adventure, then drive up to a National Park and go camping for free! Pitch that tent, unroll those sleeping bags and spend your night under the stars. Bring along some marshmallows to roast over a campfire and make some great family memories.

3) Skip the fast food

Tempted to drive through a fast food joint for lunch? Why not opt for a cheaper, healthier meal? Slow down and stop in at a local diner or café instead. Get off the main road and you’ll find tons of charming eateries to choose from! Of course you could always make sandwiches at home and bring them along in your cooler then stop at a rest area or park to eat.

4) Take the scenic route

If you want to save money on tolls, then why not get off the main highway and take the scenic route? Get a map and plan a route full of interesting roadside attractions. The trip might take a little longer this way but it will be more memorable and you’ll more opportunities to do fun (free!) things.

5) Look for inexpensive entertainment

Use the powers of the Internet to check for festivals and free attractions in the areas you’ll be passing on your road trip. You may also want to drop by the Visitor’s Center every time you enter a new state, you’ll find lots of ideas and even get discounts and coupons for fun activities.

6) Drive in an efficient manner

Avoid slamming on the brakes, use the cruise control whenever possible, inflate your tires, and avoid speeding. Take your car in for a tune-up before you leave, too! Smart driving leads to savings on fuel!

Practice these tips and you’ll definitely be able to have a fun and memorable road trip—even on a limited budget. Enjoy!
