Tasty Tuesday: Frozen Treats

It has been SO hot already and summer has only just begun so I put together this sampling of yummy frozen treats from around the web to help us keep cool!

1) Popsicles

My kids like popsicles so much that we actually use them as rewards for good behavior and for getting chores dones, so we always have to have some in the freezer.  The New York Times has a great article on how to make all sorts of fruity, savory, creamy and even boozy popsicles – something for everyone!

2) Flavored Ice Cream

There are lots of different ice cream recipes to be found online, but my favorites are the flavored ice creams like this lemon variety from Sunkist or this dairy free avocado ice cream from Eating Well.

3) Bon Bons

You can make yummy ice cream bon bons from your favorite flavor of ice cream like these from All You magazine and I think they’re perfect for entertaining and for controlling portion sizes for those of us who love sweet treats but need to keep from going overboard.

4) Yogurt Dipped Berries

We really enjoy eating frozen berries like grapes and blueberries in the summer so I love this idea of dipping strawberries and blueberries in yogurt before freezing them for an extra special treat!

5) Watermelon Pie

Fruit sherbet is always a favorite summertime dessert and this watermelon pie from Make and Takes is a unique way to prepare and serve your favorite flavors.

6) Ice Cream Sandwiches

When I was a kid we usually had ice cream sandwiches in the freezer to help cool us off after a hard day of play, but they never looked anything like these creative ice cream sandwich varieties from All Parenting.

7) Frozen Doggie Treats

Since our canine friends will be pretty hot this summer too, I wanted to include this Frosty Paws Dog Ice Cream recipe from Big Dog Boutique that contains doggie favorite ingredients like yogurt, peanut butter and honey.

I highly recommend Plan to Eat for a great place to store all your favorite recipes! Check it out with a free trial and see how easy it is to add recipes from the Internet, plan meals for your family and even print out a handy grocery list.

Pizza and Ice Cream Party with the Family!

My younger brother and his family live in Korea where he works on a US military base and they get to come back to the states to visit once a year.  Usually they get to stay for two to three weeks but this year they can only stay for 10 days so we’re going to have to cram a lot of stuff into a short period of time.

My kids absolutely love getting to visit with their cousins so we’ll plan a few fun things for them plus some family get togethers like yesterday’s Father’s Day celebration and a backyard barbecue we have planned next weekend for my dad’s birthday.

Since we’re running so hard this week I’m thrilled to have simple solutions at hand like Tombstone frozen pizzas and Nestle Drumsticks!  We had a houseful of kids and adults at my parents’ place yesterday and everybody was happy with the assortment of pizzas and ice cream cones that were served.

A few days before they arrived I shopped at Walmart for the Nestle ice cream treats and the Tombstone pizzas and we made some salads and other side dishes that turned our quick meal into a feast.  There is a wide variety of choices in the Tombstone pizza line from plain cheese to 4-meat double top so there’s always something to please everyone.  Same with the Nestle Drumsticks, a bunch of different flavor choices and you can even choose smaller portion sizes that are great for kids or dieters looking for a sweet treat without the calories.

Keep track of all the fun at the Nestle Drumstick Facebook page, including their current Raise a Cone to Summer sweepstakes, and on the Tombstone pizza Facebook page.  Don’t forget, you can enter to win a year’s worth of Tombstone pizzas in their #GrabSummerFun Pinterest party!

Have You Tried Edy’s Shakes Yet?

Have you tried the new Edy’s Slow Churned Rich & Creamy Shakes or Smoothies yet?  I have a confession to make . . . I could actually survive on ice cream and milk shakes.  BUT, if I tried to do that for real I’d have to buy a whole new wardrobe, over and over.  My big problem is portion control.  If I bring a gallon of ice cream home it will likely be gone in two days and we don’t usually share it with the children (shhhhhhhh).  Well these Edy’s shakes are the answer to my problem!

They really are rich and creamy, but they have 1/2 the fat and 1/3 fewer calories than regular shakes.  When you peel the top off the container you’ll see a hole in the middle of the ice cream where you can pour in 1/3 cup of milk then stir it with a spoon to make your own shake.  This chocolate variety (my favorite) has just 240 calories and 45 calories from fat when you use fat free milk.  Compare that to a small chocolate shake from McDonald’s, which contains 440 calories and 90 calories from fat.  Keep in mind that the Edy’s shake is 10 oz. and the McDonald’s shake is 12 oz., but that’s still a pretty big difference in my book.

You can get the Edy’s Shakes and Smoothies in eight different flavors – Cookies ‘n Cream, Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry Banana, Mixed Berry, Sunrise Blend, and Tropical.  I was first introduced to the Smoothies at the Mom 2.0 Summit where I had the opportunity to try the Strawberry Banana and the Mixed Berry varieties and they’re both fabulous.  They make the perfect breakfast or snack on the run!  I’ve also enjoyed the Cookies ‘n Cream milk shake, but the Chocolate variety is still my favorite.  I also love that I can keep them handy in the freezer and just pull one out whenever I feel like it, PLUS the only dish I have to wash afterward is a spoon!

If you’d like to try Edy’s Shakes or Smoothies head over here for a $1 off coupon, or if you live west of the Rockies you can click here for a Dreyer’s coupon.

Disclosure – I received free coupons from Edy’s / Dreyer’s to facilitate this review.  All thoughts and comments are my own and I received no other compensation for this post.
