6 Strategies for Shopping Consignment Sales

6 Strategies for Shopping Consignment Sales

We have a local Mom2Mom kids consignment sale that is held twice a year at the fairgrounds and I always make sure to hit each sale so I can stock up on kids’ clothes for the season. It’s such a thrill to leave each consignment sale with a load of great deals on quality used clothes, shoes and toys for my kids. At every sale I’ve been able to buy great brands of gently used and sometimes brand new items for a fraction of their retail price. Since I’ve got five kids and a limited budget consignment sales are a fabulous way to give them extended wardrobes without breaking the bank.  As an example, at this month’s sale I purchased 34 clothing items – jeans, pants, shirts, hoodies and skirts – plus a couple boxed toys for $126.  Score!

Here are some of favorite tips for finding exactly what you need and getting the best deals when shopping consignment sales:

Shop With A List

Take a list of the things you know you need with you – for example, our little boys get lots of hand me down jeans and shorts from their big brother but few of the shirts survive so I got them lots of shirts and no pants, just a few new pairs for my big boy.

Get Perfect Fitting Shoes

Draw around your children’s feet on a piece of paper and take it with you if you’re planning to shop for shoes. The shoes are never in any semblance of order at these sales and it can be hard to figure out the size. With drawings of your kids’ feet you’ll be able to quickly and easily determine if they’ll fit without having to bring your kids with you to the sale.

Leave The Kids At Home

Consignment sales are usually pretty packed with people and the displays can be pretty busy so you don’t need any other distractions.  Find somebody to watch the kids so you can concentrate on the hunt for deals without lots of begging to hit the toy aisle.

Bring A Basket

Bring something to carry the goodies! Many sales ban the use of strollers while shopping so bring a laundry basket (or maybe hubby) along to hold all the finds while you’re hunting for more. If you’ve got a rolling basket or cart then bring it along so your arms don’t get tired.

Double Check Everything!

Some clothing items look great from the front but have stains or rips on the back, missing buttons or broken zippers and you don’t want to find that out after you’ve left the sale.

Participate In The Sale

Volunteer or sell your own items at the consignment sale so you can shop early. I’ve done this before and plan to again at the next sale – if you volunteer to work a sale or if you sell your own gently used things then you typically get to shop before the sale is open to the public and you’ll have best pick!  Plus I always figure it’s a bonus if I end up making more in sales than I spend.

My 12/17 Walgreens Trip – $117.98 for $38.79 or 67% Off

wags_121712

I ended up buying more than I had intended at Walgreens today because I got such a great deal on the gel fingernail polish and I found these freezer pops on clearance for $1 each. Since I spent a little more than expected here and there was really only chocolate and makeup on my CVS list, I decided to skip that trip today. I can’t wait to try the new L’Oreal Triple Resist formula that I got for FREE by asking at the cosmetics counter if they still have the “Golden Ticket” available. In the back of the new Walgreens Holiday magazine (with Taylor Swift on the front) it says that each Walgreens store will have ONE golden ticket available to be given to the first person who asks for it – they’ve been available since early November but the coupons are only good from December 15th through January 15th so it’s very possible that your store may still have their ticket left also. Plus, you should always ask at the cosmetics counter if they have any available coupons for the items you’re buying. I had a Walgreens store coupon for $2 off the Sensationail, then I found out that they had $2 off manufacturer coupons behind the counter so I went ahead and grabbed two bottles for just $4.99 each! It’s nearly impossible to get gel polish for less than $10, and retail price is between $13 and $18, so I’m thrilled with that deal. Today I bought $117.98 worth of goodies for $38.79, or 67% off. Living Frugally: 6 Things Every Beginner Should Know

Living frugally definitely isn’t easy. It can be especially difficult to forego that overpriced cup of coffee or a brand new pair of jeans if you’re a complete beginner at living a frugal lifestyle. As a newbie to living frugally, here are some things you need to learn:

1) Start gradually.

You can’t expect to drastically cut your budget in half and follow it faithfully on your first try. Not only will you feel deprived, but your family will feel the pinch, too. It takes a bit of practice to adopt a simpler, more frugal lifestyle. Take baby steps and gradually redirect your resources to better align with your goals.

2) Embrace your goals.

Yes, saving money is one of your goals—but you may find it more motivating to have a specific reason for your saving. Are you aiming for an earlier retirement? Do you want to start your own business? Do you want to pay off your mortgage? It will be easier for you to make frugal choices if you keep your eyes on your goals.

3) Be on the same page as your loved ones.

Don’t be the only one in the family making frugal choices. Your spouse and children need to be just as committed to making lifestyle changes if you truly want to improve your financial situation. Set common goals and discuss the sacrifices and changes each family member will need to make. Encourage each other when the going gets tough.

4) Make selective sacrifices.

Keep in mind that you’re just starting out and that you shouldn’t deprive yourself of some luxuries. If you’ve been having home-cooked meals all week, then why not treat your family to a nice lunch this weekend? Don’t be afraid to splurge and indulge from time to time.

5) Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Remember that as you venture into living frugally, you will have good days and you will have bad days. Don’t be disheartened by the occasional slip-up. Understand that mistakes are part of the learning process. With practice, making frugal choices will soon become second nature to you.

6) Monitor your progress and reward success.

Monitor your progress on a monthly and annual basis. You’ll feel a wonderful sense of fulfillment after paying off credit card debt and mortgages, and from seeing your account savings grow. Celebrate financial milestones! You deserve it!

Couponing 101: 5 Tips Beginners Should Know

If you’re a dedicated saver, then couponing is surely something you should be doing. Couponing is a wonderful way to save precious dollars on your regular trips to the grocery store. If you’re a beginner at collecting and using coupons, then here are some tips you might find extremely helpful:

1) Know where to find coupons.

A real saver knows where to find coupons. The Sunday newspaper is a cherished source of coupons, and so are the flyers being given out at the supermarket. You should definitely also take advantage of the Internet. Perform an online search for coupons that you can print out. If you’re looking for a coupon for a particular brand, then check the merchant’s website to see if there are any great deals you can take advantage of before hitting the stores.

2) Try new things.

As you clip coupons, you’ll find wonderful deals on all sorts of brands and products. If you want to use these coupons, keep in mind that you should be open to trying new products. You can’t always be loyal to a particular brand if you want to get the best deals.

3) Plan ahead.

Plan your weekly menu based on the coupons you’ll be using to match with the sales for that particular week. If you’re using a coupon for chicken, then plan on cooking several meals using chicken over the next few days. This way you’ll be able to truly make use of your coupons instead of letting things go to waste.

4) Stock up on non-perishable items.

If you’ve got coupons for basic non-perishable items such as soap, toothpaste and paper towels, take advantage of them even if you aren’t running low on supplies yet. There’s nothing wrong with stocking up on some items if you know you’ll eventually use them. Of course, make sure you’ve got space for it at home!

5) Aim to save.

Remember that the ultimate goal behind your couponing is to save money on the items that you need! Sure, you have a coupon – but don’t purchase a particular item if you don’t actually need it or have a use for it.
