Pinkeye and the LYSOL Healthing Initiative

Pinkeye - Conjunctivitis

Did you know that there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting? According to some healthing tips from LYSOL, it’s not only important to clean and organize, but it is also very important to kill germs on commonly touched surfaces around your home to reduce the risk of spreading viruses and bacteria  between members of the family.

This point was recently driven home for me when the school called to ask me to pick up one of the quads because his eyes were red and mattery and they thought he might be contagious. He was just fine that morning when I dropped the five kids off at school so I was a little grumpy when I went back up there, but his eyes were red and puffy so I took him on over to the urgent care center.

After spending nearly four hours (ouch!) at the urgent care center we left with a diagnosis of conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye, and a prescription for antibiotic eye drops. Since pinkeye is so contagious he couldn’t return to school for at least 24 hours after treatment which meant that he was out of school the next day too. I spent that day washing pillows, sheets, and wiping down every surface I could find with LYSOL® Disinfecting Wipes.

With LYSOL you can go beyond cleaning  to healthing with a full line of disinfecting cleaners, wipes, hand soaps and foams. This is very important to my family, especially during times like these when we successfully contained the pinkeye contagion and kept the other four kids from getting it too! In addition to these great products, LYSOL does lots of great stuff to improve healthing in the community like their YMCA tour with “Coast to Coast Healthing Stops”, teaching kids healthy habits in 65,000 schools across the country and their CDC partnership. For more information on healthing visit the LYSOL website or check them out on Facebook.

Planning a Do It Yourself Bathroom Remodel

glass tiles

I’ve been planning a bathroom remodel for awhile and now that we’re getting close to summer and the kids getting out of school, I’m enjoying shopping for the new fixtures and tile that I’d like to put in there. In my opinion, the shopping is the fun part, although I really do like to do the work myself too.

Laying tile floors is pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it and there are tons of videos and “how to’s” online to help get you started. I really like the idea of doing a whole wall in these 1″ square mosaic glass tiles and since they come in 12″ x 12″ sheets you can do a whole wall pretty quickly with a lot less effort than it would appear to take.

glass tiles

This color scheme with a mixture of stone, porcelain, glass and metal tiles is at the top of my wish list, but there are so many different colors, styles, sizes and shapes to choose from that I think the shopping portion of this do it yourself project is far from over.  I’m super excited to give my bathroom a whole new look and hardly wait until I have some free time this summer to get it started.

Updating With a Replacement Bow Window

Bay Windows

I’m very lucky to be able to work from home as a blogger and social media consultant and feel blessed to have a five second commute. On the other hand, that means I don’t get out very much except to drop the kids off at school and pick them back up. My house has a formal dining room that I’ve turned into my office and I spend a great deal of my time there.

Since I spend so much of my time in the home office I’d really like for it to be as comfortable as possible and while I’m planning to remodel the kitchen and bathroom sometime soon (code for eventually!), I’d really like to also replace the front windows with either a bay or bow window. I’ve been checking out pictures of windows everywhere like at this bay windows Boston website so I can get ideas about how I’d like for it to look.

A bay window like the one above would add more than just new style to the front of the house, it would also bring lots of extra light into my office and increase the view of the front yard which is surrounded by fruit, oak and pine trees. I’m getting super excited about the idea that I could upgrade my existing windows without a lot of hassle and make my favorite room in the house even more comfortable. Of course the possibilities are endless and I’m having lots of fun checking out all the different options.

My Dream Kitchen and Bath Remodel

Mosaic Glass Tile Backsplash

I absolutely love do-it-yourself projects around the house and I’ve been dying to update the kitchen and master bathroom. I’d really like to have a professional come in and install some granite counter tops for me, but then I’m sure I’d have to also spruce up the rest of the kitchen.

I’ve put down ceramic tile floors in the kid’s playroom and in a couple rentals that I’m super glad I don’t own anymore, so I think that putting in mosaic tiles for a backsplash in the kitchen would be very easy to do using these 1″x1″ tiles that are sold in 12″x12″ sheets.

Marble and Metal Fusion Mosaic Tiles

I really like the look and colors in the kitchen shown at the top, but I think I’m really leaning toward this style that mixes marble, glass and decorative copper tiles. I collect antique copper pots, pans and primitive hammered copper artwork and this mosaic would match my decor perfectly. Of course there are tons of different styles, designs and colors to choose from when you go with mosaic tiles, so there is something for every taste.

Random Brick Mosaic Tiles

While I’m at it, I think I’m going to have to renovate the bathroom as well. There are lots of different shapes to choose from, including bricks and diamonds and I think I’d like to mix it up a little. I’d pick something in a matching color scheme, but I really like the look of these random brick style mosaic tiles for a shower surround. I’ve been checking out photo galleries of tile projects this morning and I’m almost salivating over all the different designs. I think the shopping portion of the project is at least half the fun, but I’m ready to get started because I think that updating the kitchen and bathroom will make it seem like I’m coming home to a whole new house!

SeptiCleanse Septic Tank Treatment Review and Giveaway

septicleanse1

Septic tanks are very common in our area and with five young children in the house ours gets quite the workout. Our washing machine seems to constantly be going and one of the recommended ways to keep it maintained and in the best shape is to reduce water levels and laundry loads, but that simply isn’t possible in our household.

Since the constant laundry water and laundry detergent flowing through the septic tank tend to reduce or kill off the good bacteria that keep things flowing properly in there, we do what we can to keep it in as good of shape as possible. The alternative, if it gets clogged up and begins to malfunction, is a very large bill to get it pumped or worse case scenario, replaced. Here are a few tips to keep your septic tank healthy:

  • Plan landscaping, gutters and drains to help divert rainwater from the drainfield
  • Keep trees at least 100 feet away from the septic system to avoid damage from the roots
  • Only run the dishwasher when it is full
  • Garbage disposals should be avoided as they can double the solids in the septic tank
  • Never flush things like coffee grounds, cigarette butts, cat litter or sanitary napkins
  • Don’t flush chemicals like paint thinner, varnish or motor oil
  • Do not pour grease down the drain
  • Regularly maintain your system with a septic tank treatment

We try to live by these rules, and we’re adamant about using a septic tank treatment monthly. For that reason I was thrilled with the people at SeptiCleanse contacted me about trying out their treatment system of sludge-busting enzymes and bacteria. Their treatment is unique in that it is customized to your particular needs. They have a buyer’s guide that helps pinpoint the exact treatment that you need based on the age of your home and the current condition of your septic tank.

They sent us the Heavy Shock and 6 Month Maintenance plan, which retails for $359, and I’m very pleased with the packaging, speedy delivery, and ease of use! I feel confident knowing that we’re doing the best we can to care for the property and the septic tank and I’m thrilled to be able to give away another  Heavy Shock and 6 Month Maintenance plan to one lucky reader.

Review: Otterbox Case for iPhone 5

Otterbox iPhone 5 Case

I’ve had an iPhone 4 for quite awhile and even though I’ve been coveting a new iPhone 5, there was nothing wrong with my old phone so I’ve been trying to be patient about getting a new one. Since the day I got my 4 I’ve had it in an Otterbox Defender case which has protected it very well over the last couple years, so when I got the opportunity to review a new Otterbox case I figured that was the perfect excuse to get a new phone. That makes tons of sense right?

A new iPhone 5 starts at $199, when you sign a new contract, and I found out that I could get $160 from Gazelle for my old iPhone 4 so that made the decision to get a new phone very easy for me. The great part is, that my old Otterbox case kept the phone in nearly pristine condition so I was able to trade it in for a decent amount of money.

Otterbox iPhone 5 Case

Although I really liked my old pink Otterbox case, and am very pleased with how well it protected my phone, I didn’t like that the outer part of the case was very flexible and began to stretch a little over time from repeatedly opening and closing the covers over the charger and ear bud areas. The new cases are made from a different type of plastic that isn’t nearly as flexible so I believe that they’ve corrected that little issue.

My girls helped me pick out my new case and I’m very happy with this two tone purple and violet one that they selected. You can find Otterbox cases in most major retail outlets, but the thing I like best about their website is that you can build your own case by mixing and matching any of the available inner and outer cover colors to match your own unique style.

Frankly, I wouldn’t use anything less than an Otterbox Defender case on my precious new phone. The case has three layers of protection with a scratch resistant face and is intended to help protect your phone from moisture intrusion and impact damage. I’m so happy with all my Otterbox products that I also just bought a case for hubby’s mini iPad and I’m very happy to recommend their products to others.

6 Ways to Make This a Cash Holiday!

6 Ways to Make This a Cash Holiday!Every year when the holiday season hits, it seems as if there is a race to drain our wallets. Don’t succumb! Let’s not use plastic to fund our season this year, and let’s not blow our budgets. It may require us to make some different choices, but it will certainly feel a lot better in January when we aren’t suffering the post-holiday financial hangover!

1) Make a Plan

I cannot stress this enough. Plan your budget, plan your gift giving, plan your event spending, plan your time. When we go into the holidays without a plan, we will become overwhelmed. And overspend. Does that bring you joy? Does it bring others joy? Then don’t do it! Determine what you realistically have to spend and decide how much of that amount you want to spend on gifts, parties, etc. I know it’s hard, but stick to it.

2) Cut Back

It is very important that if you find you don’t have the budget for all you would like to buy or do, that you make careful, conscious decisions of what to cut out. Decide which traditions are important to you and which ones you may be doing simply because you always have. If you buy Nutcracker ballet tickets every year, but your family really isn’t looking forward to going, don’t go. If you have a lot of holiday events you will be attending, don’t buy a new outfit for every event—work with what you have and buy a piece or two to jazz up what you already own. Pare back your holiday meals to the food that actually gets eaten—all too often we are throwing away perfectly good food.

3) Do Less Gift Giving and More Sharing of Time

See if certain friends and family may be willing to forgo the exchanging of gifts this year and instead exchange some quality time. By next year, you may have forgotten the token gift your girlfriend gave you, but my bet is you will remember going to see a free concert in the park with her.

4) Choose a Meaningful Gift

Sometimes we tend to overbuy because we KEEP buying! Choose a gift—ONE gift—that you want to buy someone and then STOP BUYING! It’s so easy to keep picking up little trinkets here and there, but resist the urge. All of those little things do add up rather quickly.

5) Plan Your Meals

November and December seem to fly by, and it becomes so tempting to pick up a pizza here and order in Chinese there. Instead, make a simple weekly meal plan that you can stick to. Even if you are just heating up a frozen pizza, it’s still less expensive than takeout. Plus, one weekly trip to the grocery store has to be a lot less stressful than 7 mad dashes to already packed fast food chains and carry out establishments.

6) Pat Yourself on the Back

It may be hard to not overspend, but you will thank yourself later. And honestly, you’ll feel more at peace with yourself through the holiday season. Take a little time to put your feet up, enjoy a mug of cocoa and congratulate yourself for making positive changes in your spending!

6 Frugal Holiday Decorating Ideas

Pine branch with Christmas decorations

Now that the season is upon us it’s time to start thinking about sprucing up our homes with some seasonal holiday décor. If you’re looking for a few ideas to breathe new life into your seasonal decorating (without breaking the bank), look no further!

1) Go (Ever)Green

Bring the outside in—if you live near a wooded area or have friends with pine trees on their property, you can take a few cut pine branches, tie the end with a festive bow, and hang on your doors to add some holiday cheer on the cheap. You might also display a branch on the fireplace mantel along with some ornaments.

2) New Life for Christmas Ornaments

Do you have any Christmas ornaments that may be chipped or are just more than you want to put on you tree? Display them in a clear glass vase or bowl—the imperfections won’t be visible from inside the glass (or you can turn them so the imperfections can’t be seen), and you get a new, free to you decoration.

3) Pine Cones

Pine cones are a wonderful, inexpensive way to dress up your home for the holidays. Gather them on a nature walk (also free entertainment and exercise) and display them in a pretty basket or vase, spread them across a mantle or group them around the base of some candles (away from the flame, of course) to give your home a rustic holiday feel.

4) Old Sleds

Give an old wooden sled a new lease on life! It doesn’t have to be shiny and perfect to be pretty. Add a large bow or a pine bough to the front of the sled and lean it upright next to your doorway—it’s a fast, festive way to dress up the front of your home.

5) Oldies, But Goodies

Creating old-fashioned strings of popcorn and cranberries is not only quaint, but inexpensive AND a fun way to spend some time with family. Put on some holiday music, sip some eggnog or cider and string til your hearts content! They look so charming hung on trees or woven into garland.

6) Teddy Bears

If you have children (or if you have plush teddy bears around from the days when you USED to have children), there is a good possibility you may have teddy bears tucked away somewhere in your home. Huddle a few together, tie big plaid bows around their necks, and you have an instant nostalgic holiday display!

5 Hidden Moving Costs You Should Watch Out For

Woman moving inMost people will tell you that moving can be a stressful, chaotic and expensive experience. No matter how organized and careful you are with your moving budget, you’ll find that additional costs can quickly and unexpectedly add up. If you want to reduce your moving costs, then here are some hidden moving costs that you should watch out for:

1) Packing supplies and materials

A number of moving companies charge extra for packing supplies and materials such as boxes, bubble wrap, and packing tape. The cost of these materials can easily add up to hundreds of dollars, so start collecting sturdy boxes as early in the moving process as possible. Make sure to be thorough in your packing so that the moving company doesn't have to redo your work later on.

2) Disconnection fees.

You may not be aware of it, but some moving companies charge extra if they do more than just pick up your boxes and load them into the truck and vice versa. Asking movers to disconnect gas lines or disassemble furniture may cost you more than expected.

3) Long carry or stair fees

Some moving companies charge extra if the movers have to carry your furniture up the stairs, or if they have to walk a very l

ong distance to get to your home. Natural obstacles or narrow driveways may also make it more difficult for movers to carry your items from one place to another. If you’re moving to the ninth floor of a certain apartment building, you must remember to ask the moving company about these additional location fees.

4) Charges for very heavy items.

Do your movers need extra equipment or manpower for heavy items such as hot tubs, grand pianos, and the like? Inform the moving company of all of these large items and check that they include lifting fees in the estimate. You don’t want to get caught off guard when you see your final bill.

5) Time

Some moving companies bill by the job, while other companies bill by the hour. Hiring a company that charges by the job may mean that they’ll move fast, while going with a company that charges by the hour may mean that you’re not just paying for the drive to your new home, but for their breaks, too. Be sure to ask about this payment method to ensure that your movers don’t take their sweet time on purpose.

With so many things to think about and pack, it can be easy to miss out on a few details. Take these hidden moving costs into consideration and you’ll find yourself more financially prepared for your big move.
