Pinkeye and the LYSOL Healthing Initiative

Pinkeye - Conjunctivitis

Did you know that there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting? According to some healthing tips from LYSOL, it’s not only important to clean and organize, but it is also very important to kill germs on commonly touched surfaces around your home to reduce the risk of spreading viruses and bacteria  between members of the family.

This point was recently driven home for me when the school called to ask me to pick up one of the quads because his eyes were red and mattery and they thought he might be contagious. He was just fine that morning when I dropped the five kids off at school so I was a little grumpy when I went back up there, but his eyes were red and puffy so I took him on over to the urgent care center.

After spending nearly four hours (ouch!) at the urgent care center we left with a diagnosis of conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye, and a prescription for antibiotic eye drops. Since pinkeye is so contagious he couldn’t return to school for at least 24 hours after treatment which meant that he was out of school the next day too. I spent that day washing pillows, sheets, and wiping down every surface I could find with LYSOL® Disinfecting Wipes.

With LYSOL you can go beyond cleaning  to healthing with a full line of disinfecting cleaners, wipes, hand soaps and foams. This is very important to my family, especially during times like these when we successfully contained the pinkeye contagion and kept the other four kids from getting it too! In addition to these great products, LYSOL does lots of great stuff to improve healthing in the community like their YMCA tour with “Coast to Coast Healthing Stops”, teaching kids healthy habits in 65,000 schools across the country and their CDC partnership. For more information on healthing visit the LYSOL website or check them out on Facebook.

Trying Out Culturelle Probiotics for Kids

Culturelle Probiotics for Kids

I’m a big believer in probiotics and I take them daily so I was thrilled to find out that Culturelle makes probiotics for kids. Probiotics help to keep the proper balance between good bacteria and bad bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract which reduces digestive upset and boosts your body’s natural defense systems. That’s especially nice during this cold season when the kids can really benefit from improved health and immunity!

Culturelle Probiotics for Kids

Two of my five children are lactose intolerant like I am and I swear by my probiotics, that they help keep me on an an even keel, so I wondered if I could get the kids to take them as well. They’re pretty picky about what they’ll take but Culturelle for kids comes in two different varieties – the packets are powder form and can be mixed with water or juice for children to drink, or they also come in a chewable variety. My five kiddos all enjoy the chewable ones and say they taste great, but I was ready to start mixing up the packets with juice for them if I needed to do that!

Culturelle Probiotics for Kids

My kids like the Culturelle chewables so much that they now ask for them on a daily basis, and I’m happy to know that they’re the #1 pediatrician recommended probiotic brand. The packets are completely flavorless, plus they’re dairy and gluten free, and are recommended for children ages 1 to 3. Children 3 and up can take the chewables, which are sugar, dairy and gluten free, and kids over 100 pounds can take the Culturelle Digestive Health Probiotic capsules that I take.

Culturelle® Kids Probiotics is a natural solution for better digestive and immune health. Not only does it support a child’s digestion, helping to reduce occasional digestive upset, but it also helps to boost digestion and overall digestive health.

Considering that 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract, a healthy and balanced digestive system plays a vital role in strengthening a child’s overall health and well-being.

What Type of Heart Rate Monitor is Right For You?

Heart Rate Monitors

There are so many choices these days when it comes to heart rate monitors that it can be difficult to make a selection. Here are some of the different kinds available and some tips on choosing the perfect one for you:

Fitness or Weight Loss

If you are trying to lose weight, get more active, or improve your fitness level then a heart rate monitor would be great for you. Use them to monitor your heart rate to help get the most out of your workout and take it to the next level. Basic heart rate monitor watches with chest straps are perfect for this.

Sports

There are sport watch style heart rate monitors that are specifically made for runners, mountable GPS style monitors for cyclists and even waterproof styles designed for swimmers and triathletes that actually count your strokes as well.

GPS Monitors

Some wrist watch style and bike mount heart rate monitors include GPS capabilities that also track your speed and distance while cycling, running, jogging or walking.

Before you pick out a heart rate monitor for yourself, think about all the activities that you’ll be doing while wearing it so that you can choose one that best suits your style and needs then get ready to maximize your performance by tracking your personal stats.

Don’t Forget to Use Sunscreen!

Having fun at the beach

The kids will be out of school for spring break next week and I’m planning to take them out to the beach for a couple of day trips. On the days that we won’t be going to the beach I’m sure that they’ll still be spending most of their time outdoors as long as this beautiful weather we’ve been having continues. We’re in the sunny south so I’m always very careful to use a broad spectrum sunscreen on the kids and myself, but really its important no matter where you live and no matter what the weather outside is like.

Even on cloudy days you can still be affected by UV rays, plus if you can see light through the fabric you’re wearing then UV rays can get through also. To protect yourself and your family from UV rays that can cause skin cancer you should put on a lotion with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater before you get dressed and look for “broad spectrum” protection to protect against both UVB and UVA rays.

Always apply a sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out in the sunscreen, cover up as much as possible, wear a hat, use lip balm with SPF to protect your lips, wear sunglasses that block UV rays, reapply sunscreen after swimming or sweating and try to limit your exposure during midday when the sun’s rays are most intense.

Get Flawless Results With Airbrush Makeup

Airbrushing Makeup

I have a mild case of Rosacea on my cheeks and I go to great lengths to cover it up with makeup. I use a green moisturizer as the first layer, then use a primer on top of that and finish with a powder mineral makeup. This works for me for the most part, but it wears off rather easily during the day and takes quite a few steps to apply.

My dermatologist has told me that I can expect the Rosacea to get worse as I get older and that medications don’t really help. On the other hand, I can get laser treatments to remove the red spots, but he tells me that I’ll have to get them repeatedly as the spots reappear.

I believe that I’ve found an easier alternative though and could get better results by airbrushing makeup on instead of my usual three step process. An airbrush makeup system starts at around $150, but it provides flawless coverage and can cover up Rosacea, acne, and other skin imperfections.

An airbrushing makeup system provides sheer, buildable coverage and its virtually weightless so you can apply a little, or a lot where needed. It also goes on very fast so you can get picture perfect skin in less time than it takes to apply regular makeup.

Touching Moments That Heal Our Emotional Hearts

Life's a beach!

I’ve had some life altering events occur in the last couple of weeks that have resulted in my filing for divorce from my husband of 12 years. It’s a very difficult time for all of us, but especially for the kids who are too young to really understand what is going on around them right now.

After more than a decade of dwindling emotional connection, I decided to take the weekend at the beach to reconnect with my thoughts and the most important people in my life. I’ve had lunch with a dear old friend that I haven’t seen in years (that’s me and Jim below at lunch), have talked to friends that I haven’t spoken with since middle or high school, and have been amazed at how a simple pat on the back or a hug can affect my emotions and well-being.

Lunch with a dear friend

Did you know that your emotional state can affect your heart’s health? It makes a lot of sense to me, but I didn’t realize that there is actual science showing that stressful feelings can increase your risk of developing heart disease and other ailments. This has been such a stressful experience for us that I’m grateful for any and all means of reducing the stress for my family and loved ones.

For that reason, I hit Sam’s Club on my way out to the beach to get some necessary supplies and ended up buying some wine and this twin pack of NIVEA lotion. Lotion is always a part of my daily life, but I feel like it’s even more important when spending so much time outside in the elements, and for making sure my skin is touchably soft while interacting with other people.

The warmth of another human’s touch can literally lift burdens from one’s heart and I have been amazed at the outpouring of support from friends and family. Physical contact from positive people who provide simple friendship and affection with nothing else behind it has been of tremendous benefit to me and my family this week and I’m sure it will continue to be while we navigate the stressful waters of starting over in a new life.

If you would like more information on NIVEA and the NIVEA Million Moments of Touch then you should check them out on Twitter and Facebook to stay up on all the latest news and information.

Friday Faves: Favorite Lipstick

I’m participating in a weekly vlog prompt with Toni from JustStopScreaming.com and several of my other blogging friends, and this week we’ve been asked to talk about our favorite lipstick. I’ve made a couple of confessions in the video and I hope you’ll watch!

I have a basket full of different lipsticks, lip balms and lip stains and the funny part is that many of them aren’t even open and I tend to stick with just one at a time. You’ll have to watch to find out my favorite, but I’d really like to hear about yours as well! Leave me a comment, and don’t forget to come back next week for another fun video. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!

5 Favorite Free Sanity Breaks

Favorite free sanity breaks!

Life takes its toll on all of us, and it’s tempting to give ourselves an expensive treat because we “deserve” one. We definitely deserve to treat ourselves, but we don’t need to give ourselves a financial hangover in the process. Sometimes we need a “pause” in our lives to truly reward ourselves. Here are a few ideas that will keep you in the black when you’re feeling blue.

1) Sunrise, Sunset

Few things in this world are as beautiful as the sun rising or setting. When we need to decompress, watching the sun rise or set can be the perfect way to let the stress melt away. Find a spot outside in a comfy setting, maybe bring along a cup of coffee or cocoa, take in the colors and just BE.

2) Enjoy the Seasons

Life passes by so quickly that we sometimes literally forget to stop and smell the roses. Each season offers beautiful sights and sounds that we can miss when we are racing through life. Set aside a half hour to commune with nature. Go outside and truly experience it. Whether it’s a moonlit walk in the snow or simply sitting in your flower garden, disconnect your mind from the “rush” of everyday life and experience the season. Breathe in the musky scent of fall leaves, feel the crunch of snow beneath your feet, really SEE the blue of a summer sky.

3) Make a Date with Fido

Spending time with your pet is one of the fastest ways to feel your blood pressure come down. Throw the ball for your dog, sit with your cat in your lap and listen to that magical purr, talk to your bird, or watch the serenity of your aquarium—all of these are nice ways to spend some quality time with your pet and save your sanity.

4) Act Like a Kid

What did you enjoy doing as a child? Did you enjoy flying a kite? Was roller skating (or blading) your thing? Maybe you enjoyed sitting on the riverbank with a fishing pole. Do those things again and re-connect with where you came from. If you have children, you can involve them too, so you both win. If you don’t have children of your own, borrow a niece or nephew, or maybe a friend’s son or daughter. Few things bring us joy like spreading joy!

5) Savor a Meal

What is your favorite meal? And when was the last time you really TASTED that meal? Whatever your fave is, make it and sit down and really enjoy it. Shut off the TV, switch your phone to silent, put candles and the “good” china on the table, and savor every bite. Eat slowly, and actually experience the flavors and textures.

As tempting as “things” can be to treat ourselves with, sometimes it’s the simple experiences in life that bring us peace and are the best rewards.

Stepping Up My Game With a FitBit

fitbit_one_500

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m having a close personal relationship with my new burgundy FitBit, and I love it! It seems that for the last seven years, since my kids were born, I’ve been gaining and losing the same ten pounds every year. Each year I’d make the same New Year’s resolution to lose the weight that I’d gained over the holidays, and I’d spend the spring getting bathing suit ready. By the time Halloween would roll around I’d be back in chocolate mode though, and start the cycle all over again.

This past October I decided that it was time I tried something different. I figured if I started before the holidays, instead of power eating my way through them and beginning my usual new year new diet, that I could at least get a head start on the weight loss.

Last summer my mother had knee replacement surgery and her physical therapist told her she’d only get as much out of the new knee as she put into it, so she started walking on a daily basis. She’s up to three miles a day most days of the week and she’s putting me to shame so I started walking with her when I’m in her neighborhood, and I’ve been doing more walking at home with the kids. I had absolutely no idea how far I was going out here in the woods so I invested in a FitBit One Wireless Activity Plus Sleep Tracker to keep track for me.

At around $100 I thought it was a little pricey, but it is way more than just a fancy pedometer and I believe it was a great investment. The FitBit Zip is a cheaper alternative at around $60, and it is very similar to the FitBit One except that it doesn’t track your sleep. I’ve had issues with bruxism (grinding my teeth while I sleep) and wake up often during the night so I decided that I really wanted the sleep tracker feature as well.

Here are some surprising things I learned right away from using the FitBit:

  • I wasn’t moving NEARLY as much as I should
  • Despite waking up a CRAZY number of times each night, my ‘sleep performance’ isn’t too bad
  • My main problem was in between meal snacks!

I expected to learn how many miles I was walking each week and how many times a night I was waking up, but I’ve really learned so much more than that. Here’s how it works – attach the FitBit to your bra with the holster, clip it to your shirt or put it in your pocket. It will keep track of your activity during the day, and at night you slip it inside the included wristband and press the button when you get in the bed. It’s super simple to use and will display your steps and other info right on the face of the device, but the online dashboard is where you can get a bunch of other great information.

fitbit_weight_600

The FitBit One comes with a small USB device that allows it to communicate wirelessly with your computer. You can then login to the FitBit.com website, which is automatically updated, and track all sorts of other things like your weight, blood pressure, glucose, foods you eat and anything else you can think of with the custom tab feature. My FitBit arrived on November 9th already charged and ready to go and I started tracking what I ate each day on the website, along with my occasional weigh-ins. I set a goal of losing 10 pounds and began to realize the biggest reason I wasn’t losing any weight was because of all the between meal snacks.

There’s usually a bag of fun size candy bars hiding behind the monitor on my desk, but once I found out how quickly they were adding up I began eating a lot less of them. I refuse to give them up, but now I save them for a treat and enjoy them more while I’m eating them.

I also found out that on the days my mom takes the kids my rear rarely leaves my chair since I typically spend those days behind the computer catching up on work. The difference in the number of steps on those days was amazing so I’ve made a conscious effort to squeeze more activity into those days. Little things add up – like getting up and dancing during the music at the end of movies. It’s just a few minutes here and there but it’s really a lot of fun and I’m thrilled that by simply keeping track of what I eat and trying to move more when I can I’ve been able to lose 6.8 pounds already, DURING the holidays!

10 Different Ways to Use Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly is one product that can usually be found in homes all across the country—and even the world. Whether in one’s makeup kit, bedside table or bathroom, this household staple has hundreds of different uses. Here are some of them:

Perfume booster – A lot of females believe that petroleum jelly, when spread onto one’s wrists or behind the ears prior to spraying perfume, allows the scent of the perfume to linger for a longer period of time.

Makeup – Looking for a cheap, quick and easy substitute for lip gloss and mascara? Dab a little petroleum jelly on your lips, and apply some of the clear jelly on your eyelashes. For an extra lift, use an eyelash curler afterwards. Petroleum jelly can also be used as a facial moisturizer or as a makeup remover.

Protect your hands – If you’re going to do dirty work like painting, rub petroleum jelly into your hands to prevent spills from soaking into your skin. Your hands will not only keep clean, but they’ll also be soft and smooth.

Watermark remover – Bothered by those water rings and watermarks on your wooden tables? Rub some jelly into the watermarks and allow it to sit overnight. Buff the surface with a dry cloth the next day and enjoy a clean table again!

Tear-free baths – Why purchase no-tears shampoo for your child when you can use petroleum jelly? Apply a bit of jelly onto your child’s eyebrows in order to create a resistant shield of sorts that keeps shampoo and soap bubbles from running down into your child’s eyes.

Lipstick remover – Have you ever had to deal with annoying lipstick stains on your cloth napkins after a dinner party? Blot petroleum jelly on the stain, and then launder as you normally would. You may not need to throw those napkins out after all!

Loosen door hinges – Squeaky doors can be very annoying. Work in a little jelly all around the hinges to make the squeaking stop!

Winter treatment for the car battery – Undo the battery’s electrical leads and remove and clean the battery caps. Spread some petroleum jelly on the connectors and posts in order to remove both gunk and rust. The jelly creates a waterproof layer that keeps all metal components resistant to snow and salt.

Changing light bulbs – Before changing a light bulb, apply some jelly to the metal rim of the new bulb. The extra layer prevents rust from forming and keeps the bulb from getting stuck in a socket.

Shoeshine – There’s no need to buy separate shoe polish for your leather and patent leather shoes. Instead, apply a quarter-sized amount of petroleum jelly on your shoes!

These are just some of the many, many uses of petroleum jelly. What are the other things can this wonder product can do?
