Septic tanks are very common in our area and with five young children in the house ours gets quite the workout. Our washing machine seems to constantly be going and one of the recommended ways to keep it maintained and in the best shape is to reduce water levels and laundry loads, but that simply isn’t possible in our household.
Since the constant laundry water and laundry detergent flowing through the septic tank tend to reduce or kill off the good bacteria that keep things flowing properly in there, we do what we can to keep it in as good of shape as possible. The alternative, if it gets clogged up and begins to malfunction, is a very large bill to get it pumped or worse case scenario, replaced. Here are a few tips to keep your septic tank healthy:
- Plan landscaping, gutters and drains to help divert rainwater from the drainfield
- Keep trees at least 100 feet away from the septic system to avoid damage from the roots
- Only run the dishwasher when it is full
- Garbage disposals should be avoided as they can double the solids in the septic tank
- Never flush things like coffee grounds, cigarette butts, cat litter or sanitary napkins
- Don’t flush chemicals like paint thinner, varnish or motor oil
- Do not pour grease down the drain
- Regularly maintain your system with a septic tank treatment
We try to live by these rules, and we’re adamant about using a septic tank treatment monthly. For that reason I was thrilled with the people at SeptiCleanse contacted me about trying out their treatment system of sludge-busting enzymes and bacteria. Their treatment is unique in that it is customized to your particular needs. They have a buyer’s guide that helps pinpoint the exact treatment that you need based on the age of your home and the current condition of your septic tank.
They sent us the Heavy Shock and 6 Month Maintenance plan, which retails for $359, and I’m very pleased with the packaging, speedy delivery, and ease of use! I feel confident knowing that we’re doing the best we can to care for the property and the septic tank and I’m thrilled to be able to give away another Heavy Shock and 6 Month Maintenance plan to one lucky reader.
