If there are items that you find you need to buy in bulk, a warehouse membership can be a great way to save some money. For example, we buy many of our staples, seasonings, fruits and vegetables at Sam’s Club. Follow these tips to get the most out of your club membership:
1) Check it Out
Before purchasing a membership, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s a good fit for your needs. These places often offer a “trial” membership where you can check them out before making a commitment to a membership. If that isn’t an option, go with a friend who belongs to the club and see what sort of deals they offer.
2) Make a Price Book
To be sure you really are getting the best deal, you need to know what you usually pay for something versus what you can get it for at the warehouse. Break the price you usually pay down by unit. Depending on the item, that may be per ounce, per pound, per roll—it just depends on the product. Then do the same for the price the warehouse has to offer. Sometimes we assume we will get a better deal at the warehouse club, but that’s not always the case.
3) Don’t Over Buy
Make sure you aren’t buying more than you can use. Just because something was a fantastic price doesn’t mean it’s a good deal for you. If you have to throw away unused food, for example, you didn’t save money. You may want to find a friend who can split some of these deals with you if that’s the case.
4) Be Creative With Storage
Obviously perishable items need to be stored properly or used in a timely fashion, but other items may simply need to be stored creatively. Some things can be stored anywhere—canned goods, toilet paper, paper towels, and diapers. Think about the unused space in your house. Maybe you could find storage space under beds, in garage rafters, on a high bathroom closet shelf. Just because it’s a can of tomatoes doesn’t mean it HAS to be stored in the kitchen.
5) Don’t Buy Things You Don’t Need
Warehouse clubs can be oh so alluring! All of those wonderful deals can be very enticing, but if you don’t need it, don’t buy it! If you end up blowing your budget because you bought all sorts of extras, then you aren’t really getting a great deal.
