I recently had the pleasure of receiving a goody box from Udi’s that was packed with an assortment of Udi’s Gluten Free Foods including Blueberry Muffins, Cinnamon Raisin Bagels, Snickerdoodle cookies, Whole Grain Bread and their new Pizza Crusts.
I have to admit that I had never tried gluten free foods before but I have several friends who either personally have issues with gluten or their children have issues. I’ve been out to dinner with friends who’ve had to scrutinize the menu to find something, anything that they can eat. The daughter of one friend has such terrible problems that just being given a couple of pretzels at school affects her health and behavior for days. Another friend developed alopecia areata and lost ALL of her hair several years ago. She and her husband have been trying unsuccessfully to have children for a few years and about a year ago someone suggested that they try switching to a gluten free diet. They were ready to try anything but were still amazed when after three months her hair started coming back in, and after six months on the new diet they got pregnant!
I’ve heard enough stories like those to understand the health benefits of going gluten free, but I’ve had this image of gluten free foods being dry, boring and tasteless. I really don’t know why, but I was happy to try out the Udi’s products so I could see for myself, and because I’m sure that my readers are either way ahead of me or would really to know also!
We first tried out the new Udi’s Gluten Free Pizza Crusts and they were really great! There are two crusts in the package and it says it will make enough for four servings, but we added a tossed salad and had enough for our family of seven. We made one with pepperoni and one with only cheese to keep the natives happy, and we all really enjoyed it!
Next, the kids and I tried the Blueberry Muffins and the Snickerdoodle cookies. The muffins were nice and moist with lots of flavor and the cookies were also very good. Hubby didn’t want to try them but he saw that the kids really liked them and then he ended up finishing them off! I’m the bagel fan in the family so I kind of hoarded those for myself, and we all shared the bread which looks and tastes just like “real bread” and was also very good.
