I’m often pretty paranoid about my breath and sometimes find myself moving away from people before talking to them because I haven’t had a mint recently or I just don’t know if my breath is bad. For this reason I was SUPER excited about the chance to review TheraBreath products, and then my friend Heather asked me “as a frugal blogger how can you justify promoting an expensive brand like that?” She definitely had a point because ya’ll know that I never pay for toothpaste!
Dr. Katz TheraBreath Oral Rinse, 16-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 2) ($18.60/2 pk Amazon)
The products certainly aren’t cheap as you can see from the Amazon prices above (fyi – these are affiliate links) and the prices are a little bit higher at the drugstore where you can buy them individually. So my response to Heather was that frugal isn’t the same as being cheap, I save where I CAN so I can spend where I WANT and if the products are worth it then I would buy them!
I have enjoyed using and learning about Dr. Katz’s TheraBreath Rinse and Toothpaste and I am happy to report that they have worked so well for me that I not only plan to continue using them, I also plan to try some of their other products as well!
I began using the products before I read up on them so the only thing I knew was that TheraBreath is the “#1 selling premium oral care brand”. I got to try the toothpaste, rinse and mouth wetting lozenges and I was surprised right away that the toothpaste is almost clear and it doesn’t foam up at all. My first reaction was “is this stuff really working?” I kept using it, along with the rinse, and I really liked them – I could actually tell a difference in the way my mouth tasted and hubby tells me that my breath is better!
That’s when I started reading up on the TheraBreath products I was using and found out that the reason the toothpaste doesn’t foam up is because it doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate like almost every other toothpaste on the market does! As it turns out, sodium lauryl sulfate is a harsh detergent that is added to toothpaste for its foaming effect so that it appears to be extra cleansing. In reality, the chemical doesn’t clean our teeth and instead has a mouth drying effect, and the drier your mouth is the better the chance of bad breath!
Bad Breath Test!
If you breath into your cupped hand to check your breath (I’ve done it too!) then all you can really smell is your hand. To really test your breath, lick the back of your hand and let it dry. Smell your hand once its dry, if it has an odor then you have bad breath! You can also check by smelling your floss after flossing your teeth. If it smells bad then your breath does too!
Other symptoms of bad breath include a sour, bitter or metallic taste in your mouth, and if your tongue has a yellow or white tinge to it.
Contrary to popular belief, bad breath DOES NOT originate in the digestive system – the real source of bad breath is bacteria that breed on your tongue, in the throat and on the tonsils. The good news is that oxygen kills the bad bacteria, and that is how the TheraBreath products work, by helping to keep the mouth moist and oxygenated. The mouth wetting lozenges are perfect for helping with this on the go!
I admit that the words “mouth wetting lozenges” on the box seemed a little strange to me so I put off trying them for a few days, not wanting to give up my favorite mints that I always carry with me. Once I finally tried them I immediately became a convert and I’ve got my husband and my dad hooked on them now also! The lozenges are made from all natural ingredients and have a pleasant minty orange flavor, but the best part for me is that they have NO after taste. Whenever I’d have a “regular” mint it always affected the taste of everything I’d eat or drink right after having one, but that was not the case with the TheraBreath lozenges. I could even have a soda or sweets (like chocolate) after and their taste was never affected.
I love the fact that I’m now using all natural ingredients and getting better results, plus I don’t have to be self conscious about my breath! Not only do I intend to continue using the TheraBreath Toothpaste, Rinse and Lozenges, I’m also planning to find room in our budget to try their TheraBrite Whitening kit. I’ll keep you informed when I do! In the meanwhile, one lucky reader is going to win a tube of TheraBreath Toothpaste and a bottle of Therabreath Oral Rinse.
