We bought a nice wood dining room table second-hand years ago right after we first got married and it came with an extra leaf for the middle and six chairs. There were just the two of us then but we wanted a family and figured we’d grow into the table. We tried for three years before we got pregnant with our oldest son so we were completely shocked when we hit the baby lotto got pregnant with quadruplets just six months after he was born.
Not that they needed them right away, but all of a sudden we needed more chairs and had no way of matching them to the ones we already had so I started checking thrift stores here and there when I got the chance and I eventually lucked out and found two chairs that were similar in finish color and shape, but they had horrible bright green seat covers. I was able to get a deal on them and then I recovered the seat cushions on all eight chairs to match. It’s super easy to do – turn the chairs over and remove the four screws holding the seat in place, cut a piece of upholstery fabric with about 6″ extra on each side, place the new fabric right on top of the old, turn the seat over and staple the fabric in place on the bottom. Screw the seat tops back in place and voila – new chairs!
Well now we’ve had the table for almost a decade, it was used when we got it and the chairs have been rode hard and put away wet more than once and a couple of them are just about to give out as they’re basically beyond repair. So – I’m on a new thrift store mission to find more chairs
I’ve also been keeping an eye out for a sale on Corelle dishes because we’re getting low on plates and with five small kids in the house we need them to be durable as well as dishwasher and microwave safe. Even though the set I would like is only about $25, the problem is that’s for a 16 pc. four place setting so we’d have to get two and we don’t really need all the saucers and cups. This week I lucked out again – not on the chairs that I was looking for, but on these 11 plates that I got for 25 cents each at the thrift store. They’re not Corelle, but they’re similar and they’ll work just fine while buying me some time to keep looking for a bargain on a double set!
