publix_031010

My oldest son is having surgery this month to have his adenoids and tonsils removed, and he will have ear tubes inserted at the same time so I’m stocking up on the Fruit Chillers since he won’t be able to eat solid food for a week or so.  I’ve been trying to print the Boost Essentials qs (with no luck so far), and I’ve got lots of broth in the stockpile, but I’m not sure what else I’ll be able to give him.  If any of you have ideas for things I can serve him PLEASE let me know!  I picked up a few other deals while I was there but I didn’t need too much so my total bill was less than $25!  I ended up with $118.07 in groceries for $23.73, or 80% off.  Here are some of the deals:

Note:  I used Target coupons for the Band Aids because I needed them (they would have been free at Target this week) and I forgot the potato chips in the car so they’re not in the picture but look for the tearpad coupons right beside the chips – I was able to get the coupon I needed for the chips while I was at the store this morning :)

  1. Great finds! I haven’t even made it to one store this week…I need to get out there!
and…for your son. My youngest is solely g-tube fed…and he lives (seriously) on Nutren Jr. w/fiber. You can google it (it’s kind of like pediasure)…vanilla flavor. I have cases of it…let me know if you want any and I can ship you some. They come 24 in a case.
I’ll keep my eyes open for Boost coupons for you.
oh…I wish we had a Publix!

  2. It’s been about 18 years ago, but here is what I gave my daughter following her tonsilectomy:

    – POPCICLES! Loads of flavors and it helps soothe the throat and numb it.
    – Jello again loads of flavors and can even be used as a drink.
    – Pudding after a few days
    – FLAT soda (you can stir most of the bubbles out or add an ounce of water) Crush ice in blender and make homemade icee.
    – Homemade slushies of all sorts of flavors. Used the blender to crush the ice, added soda or koolaid or whatever liquid desired. My girl loved Mt. Dew and strawberry koolaid mixed of all things!!!
    – Mashed potatoes made fairly thin and served barely warm
    – Yogurt after a few days.

I didn’t serve any dairy products for about 3-4 days so that it wouldn’t cause any coughing from how it sort of will stick to the throat. Encourage drinking with the heavier foods so it doesn’t either.

My daughter threw a fit for a cheeseburger on day 3. As gross as it sounds, I told her she could have on very small one as long as she would chew it up and then get rid of it – no swallowing. She wanted the flavor so bad. She also craved pickles. She is so like me. I crave pickles when I feel better. I let her wrap a pickle in a paper towel and suck on it but not bit or chew – again so she could get the flavor. She still talks about that! LOL

From one mama to another, have your son sleep propped up a bit. Keep a garbage can by the bed in case he gets ill from the drainage. Try to keep something on his stomach to keep the queasiness at bay.

Get liquid Tylenol or whatever they suggest. Swallowing pills is near to impossible. Dig out your thermometer if you don’t use it often to keep a check on his temp. Stock up on drawing material or Legos or something that will help keep him quiet if he is still pre-teen. Movies, books, etc too.

Day one and two will not be much fun but by day 3, it will all be in the rear view mirror pretty much. My daughter had strep 9x in one calendar year. We were ALL tired of it and it was so hard to keep her well long enough to get the tonsils out. She felt so much better so soon I almost had to sit on her to keep her quiet. Be prepared for that burst of energy and keep saying no for about 3 days total. After that, loosen the reigns more and more as you think he is ready to return to normal.

It will all be so worth it. You will be amazed at how much better he feels and your worry factor will drop likea rock. I wish you all well and will keep you in my prayers. Let me know how it goes. If you have questions, I might remember a good answer. :) LOL

  3. You’re wonderful Ginger! Thanks SO MUCH for these great tips – I’ll be heading out to stockup on jello, koolaid, and liquid Tylenol (I was wondering what if anything they’d give him for pain afterwards – didn’t occur to me yet that he won’t be able to swallow pills :( ). I’m also going to have to track down my blender and keep my fingers crossed that he doesn’t ask for a cheeseburger (but now I’m prepared if he does!)

  4. I had never heard of Nutren Jr. but I’ll be googling it next! Do you have to order it? I’ll bet you go through it like crazy for your son. Thanks for the reminder that I should be very grateful my son’s issues will be temporary and thanks also for your generous offer! I may just be getting back with you soon :) I’ll also keep my fingers crossed on Publix coming to your area! They do seem to be growing – not sure why but they’re building a new one just a couple miles down the street (on the same street) from the one I visit now.
