Delhaize America, the US branch of the Belgian international supermarket retailer Delhaize Group, has announced plans to open between 50 and 55 new supermarkets in the U.S. this year, many of them Bottom Dollar stores. Additionally, Delhaize plans to close 15 underperforming Food Lion stores and one underperforming Bloom store, resulting in a net increase of approximately 33 to 38 for a total number between 1,640 and 1,645 stores by the end of 2010. Plans also include the remodeling of about 50 stores, including 30 Food Lion stores.
The company also plans to put more emphasis on price competitiveness in 2010 through a new and more aggressive pricing strategy. Last May Food Lion began their “Great Price Hunters” campaign, and plans to continue in the effort to position itself as a low-price leader.
